FBI Teams Up with Prosecutors to Dismantle Transnational Crypto Fraud Network, 112 Servers and 241 Domains Seized

PANews October 15 news, according to Decrypt, the Virtual Currency Unit of the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office in New York, together with the FBI, successfully dismantled a transnational crypto investment fraud network targeting Russian-speaking communities across the United States, seizing and shutting down 112 servers and 241 associated website domains. The servers involved were mainly hosted in Eastern Europe and the United States, and the group's core infrastructure and IP nodes were distributed in Ukraine and other places.

Server forensics also showed that the scammers would strike again weeks later, posing as "asset recovery service providers" to re-victimize victims in a second round of harvesting, with the total amount involved reaching tens of millions of dollars. Prosecutors had previously shut down 400 associated domains, and this time directly seized the underlying servers in order to completely deprive the group of its ability to quickly build sites and contact victims. Law enforcement authorities have currently seized about $300,000 in stolen funds, and efforts to recover the assets are still ongoing.
