PANews reported on October 4 that after a series of cyber attacks led to personal data leaks in South Korea’s financial industry, South Korea’s financial regulator urged financial institutions to complete internal security inspections as soon as possible and report the inspection results to the regulatory authorities. Lee Eog-weon, chairman of South Korea's Financial Commission (FSC), issued a statement on Sunday after holding an emergency meeting with executives from financial institutions and industry associations: "The entire financial industry should conduct security checks quickly and thoroughly." Lee Eog-weon said a preliminary investigation showed that some attacks targeted external websites with low monitoring intensity, as well as servers used by loan agents and employees. He also said that regulatory authorities cannot rule out the possibility of using artificial intelligence in attacks, and called for speeding up the construction of security systems that can "defend AI attacks with AI." South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has been briefed on the data breach and response measures.
