Canadian Prime Minister Carney establishes national committee on artificial intelligence

According to ChainCatcher news, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the establishment of the Prime Minister’s National Commission on Artificial Intelligence in Ottawa on October 2 to provide independent and pragmatic advice on Canada’s artificial intelligence transformation. The committee will bring together public and private sector stakeholders to provide input on the evolution of the national strategy for AI for All, ranging from accelerating adoption, nurturing national champions, building sovereign AI infrastructure, and improving AI security, protecting democracy, and benefiting all Canadians.

Committee members include Ajay Agrawal, Yoshua Bengio, Sanja Fidler, John Graham, Gillian Hadfield, Jordan Jacobs, Eric Lamarre, Valérie Pisano, Senators Thomas Pitfield, Jody Thomas, Louis Vachon, Michelle Zatlyn, and ex-officio member Patrick Pichette. The Commission is supported by a small team from the Privy Council Office, and policy decisions and implementation remain the responsibility of relevant ministers and departments.

Carney said that prosperity and sovereignty in the era of artificial intelligence belong to countries that can build, adopt and govern artificial intelligence on their own terms. The committee will provide recommendations on how to manage risks, seize opportunities, and improve the lives of all Canadians.
